Sonic Screwdriver Update 06 by Police-Box-Traveler Sonic Screwdriver Update 06 by Police-Box-Traveler
Here it is folks! As done as it will get until it is in my hands and I can add the emitter crystal and internal spring.

The new classic Sonic Screwdriver. It's a conceptual piece I have come up with as a true bridge between the classic 70's/80's sonic and the modern 9th/10th Doctors sonics so this would be my take on an 8th Doctors sonic screwdriver. it features many things the 9th/10th Doctors sonic featured including a settings dial in the base and an emitter jewel (not shown...or installed ATM) and even a few visual cues from both series incarnations. It's smaller than the classic sonic by a good inch or two and is more intricate but also has a working slider mechanism similar to the classic sonic.

If you get a new run of these going, I would think I would be in for a red version with the standard black diamond. Keep us updated. Looking forward to it.

No problem. My plan is to find a local machine shop and go for it this year.

No, I'm sorry I haven't. It's been...eventful here recently. Been dealing with my grandmothers passing and tryig to get the house in order since she passed. I had no chance to look for a shop yet.

Yeah, unfortunately things happened. It's even looking like we'll be moving soon, probably after the new year in the spring.

Lol, well, thanks again for the heads up. I joined and posted on that thread on Page three and now I can't view the site. I keep getting a 404 Page Not Found error on the entire site so I'm wondering if when I pointed it out he blocked my IP address or something. According to a friend my post is still there but I can't see the thread anymore. I may post something about it in my gallery here.

HAHAHAHA! That's because it is! XD I guess they really liked my design a lot. They even included the power couplings on the grip section XD

oh i love it... iv'e got chill's!

so cool, you could probably do different colours if you wanted a different look too.

do you make these for sale, or was it just a one off?

how would it look in brass?... very victorian steampunkish!

Thanks Mark. I plan, PLAN mind you, to build a batch of these this summer to sell. I'm going to be looking for a more local machinist to make the parts.  For ow there are only 12 in existence as well as a slightly smaller prototype.

As for brass, I was thinking of brass parts but mostly it will be made of aluminum. I was considering brass for the parts that are colored blue. I have also produced three different colors by request. I made one with green accents and one with red as well as a nearly all silver one with just a red halo. I've even added different colored crystals including a peridot green, ruby red and the standard black diamond colored all glass crystals.

Thanks! It's actually not as hard to do the mechanical stuff as it seems. Hardest part is the aesthetic. It's too tempting to make it look like a lightsaber or make it too big or not keep with the look of the series or go "steampunk" by gluing clock gears to it and not really think about details or WHY something looks like it does. Everything on that sonic has a reason to be there, not just because it looks neat. XD That's the hardest thing to do with designing these.

Awesome, you should totally do screwdriver commissions :D, because that's fantastic ^_^

Well I don't do commissions exactly. I usually come up with a design and if I can make more than one I'll ask if anyone wants to get in on them. Then the people pay up front and when they are done I ship them out to people.

Commissions or a run of screwdrivers? If I do a run I will usually put it in my journals. Easiest thing to do then is add me to your watch list and keep an eye on my journals.

A commission would mean that you paid me to just make one, as opposed to doing a run where more than one, though for me not less than say ten, get made all at once. In a group run everyone pays up front for manufacturing and material costs and that lowers the price for all items across the board. Building just one costs more because costs to set up a machine to make just one part can be expensive, especially if you use a CNC, which for my sonics you DO need. If you don't use a CNC you need to mill the parts by hand which takes longer and needs more skill. This sonic in the picture is a prototype and cost me $350 to build, but when we made a run of a dozen sonics the price lowered down to $200. If we did more than that we could conceivable have brought down the price even further. Of course at a certain point you hit the optimum lowest cost to high volume manufacturing but i usually don't get that low. XD

ok here red led, wires, wooden handle, any random black piece laying around, yellow paint, silver paint, and gold paint. you can use spray paint. unless your alergect to it then just use regular paint.

oh, and a switch.

No, I mean I don't have a list of parts for this. I made all the parts on this from scratch. I drew the design on paper and then drew up blueprints for it and had the parts made on a lathe and assembled. I don't paint any of my parts because it's just not durable enough. I have the parts anodized or chemically dyed so the color stays or I just leave it a natural finish. This particular sonic doesn't have a light system in it though. I don't have enough room for the batteries or switch. I have made several sonics that light up though like this: [link] [link] [link] [link] And those are all raw brass finishes. My newest one is all copper, will extend like the 10th Doctors sonic and will light up. I may have to paint the grip but I plan to use this stuff that will chemically bond to the metal that will never come off. They use it in truck bed lining paint. I'm not done yet though. I just ordered a special piece to hold the end caps on and will machine a slot for the plate to sit in and then need the neck piece machined after. So far this is what it looks like: [link]

Lol, it's OK, I don't really need a drawing, I've built lit sonics before XD I actually work in electronics as well so I make custom electronics. XD I don't usually use plastic parts whenever I can so the sonic is more durable and tough. I've dropped my brass sonic on the ground, pavement, concrete and dirt and rocks and it didn't even phase it.

Kidding! I'm not that much of an egotist. XD I am however glad you like it. ^_^ If I can work it out some day I'm going to do a second and hopefully less expensive run of these but at the very least I'll be doing a redesign of the 4th Doctors sonic to where things in the design make more sense to me XD

I don't know if you have gotten a hold of those parts yet. But I'm sure a blue led would work well for the "emitter crystal" That's just my opinion though.
