The Cybermen! One of the Doctor's more frightening enemies. Why? There's SO many levels to what makes the Cybermen frightening. Probably the biggest is the concept of having your body altered to match everyone elses. To having all irrelevant emotions purged and your mind made like your body, like everyone elses. The loss of identity with death practically being the only way out. In many ways...almost all ways it was this that Star Trek TNG borrowed (stole) from Doctor Who which made the Borg creepy and menacing. So if you know why the concept of the Borg is scary then you know why the Cybermen are...it's just that the Cybermen were there first.
Originally I was only going to do the classic Cybermen from the original series run, then changed my mind. As much as I prefer the classic series over the modern I am not going to dismiss the modern series out of hand. I enjoy much of the modern series and the modern Cybermen are no exception to my mind. I would love to see some Mondasian Cybermen arrive and have the modern and classic Cybermen meld together into a new Cyberman though. Maybe keep the new series head, put it on a more classic space suit type jump suit, maybe keep the mechanical hands and add knee high leg guards and a classic type chest panel. That to me would look pretty good.
I also wish CO would release a Wheel in Space Cyberman so all the on screen classic Cyberman variations are represented.
Edit: Changed picture after seeing this WONDERFUL piece of art by ktalbot here: [link] Much nicer layout now and I think the low angle works better now.
Cool picture - but the original cybermen where alien robots -- I think the episode is called "Tomb of The Cybermen". One of the very early doctors -- Patrick Troughton perhaps, if I remember correctly. It is really creepy they can process you into a cyberman. Through the years through their legend has changed and they became manufactured beings made from humans in the more recent series.
I've been watching Dr Who for nearly fifty years, I saw the very first episode air when I was six, so its hard to keep it all straight.
OK, the original Cybermen were from the episode "The Tenth Planet" and they were never robots. They were always cyborgs hence the name "Cybermen". The original Cybermen were from a planet in our own solar system called Mondas which broke orbit and in order for those people to survive in the cold of space they started cybernetically hencance their bodies. The Tenth Planet was the last story of the 1st Doctor, William Hartnell in 1966. [link](Mondas) Scroll down to "Early History" for details.
The look maybe, I don't remember much of Captain EO but the idea of the collective forcing people to become a cyborg like one of them predated both via Doctor Who by twenty years.
I always felt the modern Cyberman was a good natural evolution but there are pluses and minuses for the modern and classic designs. I still would like to see a fusion of the two really.

The way the modern Cyberman would say it.
