Custom Hardware Sonic by Police-Box-Traveler Custom Hardware Sonic by Police-Box-Traveler
Well, I finally finished my Custom Hardware Steampunk-ish Sonic Screwdriver.

Originally I was going to feature a prop made by another gentleman built in a similar way to this here...but after I had received the item I realized I couldn't use it for photos. It's a long story but basically...lets just say a wooden stick with metal parts glued on it... SO! After that I had decided to build my own, my way.

Mostly this is plumbing hardware and modified components. I didn't have a lathe so I faked it and put parts I needed to turn into my drill press and filed them while spinning and making it into a passable make shift lathe.

I built it so the casing is a battery compartment and has removable watch batteries.

I also made the button out of a stainless steel bolt that I had "lathed" down which I thought nicely set off the soldering work I had done to the emitters neck and the brass plug I made for the back end.

The over all size of this sonic is JUST over 5 inches.

I plan to make a few more prototypes, one of which will go to a friend in Arizona named Ken. Great guy and helped me immensely with building my Evil Dead Chainsaw.

Another will be going to a friend that is here on DA named Carthoris :iconcarthoris: who made for me, an all brass Tom Baker style sonic screwdriver out of the sheer awesomeness of his heart. His sonic was used BTW in this pic here: [link] as well as this one here: [link] He's an awesome guy and a big lover of Doctor Who and I figure this is the LEAST I can do to thank him.

The last one of the prototypes will be sent to my "companion" Angie. Angie is an artist friend I know and she is a huge fan of Doctor Who...thanks to me. XD I want to send her something special so, I figure this will be pretty good. She does AMAZING art. Check this shot of me as the Doctor and her as my companion: [link]

You can view additional art of hers here on here blog: [link] and here: [link]

After I'm done refining my process, I'm going to try to sell these in a limited fashion on eBay. I'm going to try to cut my turn around time and parts cost and bring the quality up and sell these for around $50.00 plus shipping.

So...tell me...who would be interested in one? :D

I think Capaldi should use the one he gives to River before she dies personally. I also think it should be revealed that it's the sonic he used in the war before he switched to the one he gives River.

Capaldi is using Matt's sonic but it bulkier and glows aqua green

Hhhhhuh...odd, I never seen any news on it but that sounds rather superficial for a new Doctor.

There are filming pics of capaldi on doctor who TV of his Dr using it, and they did the same for tennant

Yes but that made sense. Tennant was taking over for Chris and Chris only was in the show for one season. Matt still used Tennant's sonic for the first episode. I just find it odd that they would do such minor cosmetic changes to Matt's sonic just for Capaldi to use it.

I looked up some pictures of Capaldi sporting a reddish-brown coat. I don't really see any differences in the sonic quite honestly but it's possible they built a few new sonics based on Matt's for Capaldi.

So, your sonic doesn't have sound effects?

Nope. XD I barely had enough room for the gear in there to put a light in XD I DO have a sonic body based on this with a place for a speaker and if I can get a sound chip that will actually fit I will rig one up for sound but for the most part the design precludes having a speaker grill pretty much anywhere since this is designed to be soldered together permanently but the upside is that this thing is practically indestructible.

But does it do wood?

Yes as long as the lock isn't wood. XD If it's a wooden draw-bolt then no.

I never understood the wood weakness myself. I mean if it's an electronic lock encased in wood then the 'sonic' part of te sonic screwdriver won't matter as you want to set the sonic for an electronic override. If the lock is mechanical and there's a keyhole of any sort then the sonic field will be going in there and turning the tumbler. Unless the actual lock itself is made out of wood then you should be fine. The only issue with wood that I see is that it's less dense and might absorb the sonic field. Regardless, if you have a 'sonic lance' feature you can just cut the lock off even if it's wood.

I know, right? And who would make a lock out of wood anyways? It's easily broken, and if the wood isn't treated properly, the wood will swell and render the lock useless! But it makes for a humorous plot device.

Exactly! I mean a six inch thick slide bolt would be fine but that's not a lock XD

Unless, you know, if it had like, a padlock on it or something. But then you wonder why you just don't use the padlock on its own?

By Rassilon, that is a most ingenious-looking device. Well done, old chap!

Oh, and by the by, would you mind telling me where you found that neat little avatar of yours. I'd like to create an avatar for my profile, but none of the images I choose seem to fit...

Thank you! I actually modified it further than you see here. ^_^ It's a little more integrated with itself now.

As for the avatar, well, i did a google search for Tardis avatars in the image searcher, found one that was close, downloaded a gif editor and resized it and changed a few things in the frames, such as the light, and I got this. The site i found this on was some sort of a message board where they apparently liked to show disturbing images...i like to believe that this avatar serves a better person now.

You're quite welcome! And thanks for the information, because I really could do with a proper avatar...the last few times i've tried to resize an image to fit the "50x50" requirements for an avatar, the result has always been disasterous. But now, perhaps I will be more successful!

Oh, and thank you for responding so promptly! This is the quickest that any deviantArt member has ever responded to one of my comments!

Well, it's like this, and I'm paraphrasing a bit, but a Time Lord is never late, nor is he ever early and he responds precisely when he means to. Which is to say, usually rather promptly.

I recommend a resizing via Microsoft Office Picture Manager since you can set the pixel dimensions better, or if you get an animated gif editor program that should have all you need to resize the gif appropriately as well as make sure the file size is correct. You can download free ones but they usually come with adware in them so be sure you remove the program and sweep your computer when you are done...unless you have a Mac in which case it won't matter.

Now then Mortimus, AKA The Meddling Monk, AKA simply the Monk, I trust you've mended your ways and are no longer mucking about in time? I dearly hope so. I would hate to have happen again what happened the last time. ;)

Well, i'll be sure to take all this down for future reference. Thanks very much for your time!

Oh, and for your information, I am not the Meddling Monk, nor am I affiliated with him or the Time Lords in any way. In fact, my title is really a misconception as it was given to me by a corrupt faction of the Time Agency that was trying to frame me for interference crimes that I never commited. I simply hung on to the title because it has a nice ring to it. Please do not mistake me for that miserable, meddling old cad...whom, I might add, has been dead for several years...

mmm, cad he might be, but dead...weeeell, in this wide cosmos I've learned that many beings never really do ever rest in peace. I have a feeling he may return, and well, given your title I had to err on the side of caution, and well, regeneration and all it can be hard to tell, so allow me to beg your forgiveness. Mistaken identity always has a way to rear itself. You wouldn't believe how many times people somehow mistake me for this universes Doctor. I mean, I'm only into my 6th incarnation now. Quite awkward.

Well, due to the separation of the time line at the point of my creation I have my own Tardis as well thankfully. Still looks like a police box but I'm glad that in my reality i managed to avert the Time War and keep my Tardis mostly intact...well, as intact as my previous five incarnations had left it at any rate. More so now that I managed to get some upgrade replacement parts on Gallifrey.

Having a lathe is both good and bad. It's like having a menu with a million items on it. If you can't get parts, or parts won't fit, then a lathe is your friend. If you want help, I will make a no cost offer to make the parts for you at this time.

Well, I just ordered a Sonic Pen for the electronics. I'm hoping they will be smaller then the regular sonic Screwdriver set. I should get them by next week to dismantle and check. I figured everything out but I still need to find the way to make the battery pack.

It wasn't as time consuming to build as it was finding the parts to use in the first place as well as figure out how to rig some of the electronics XD Now that I know how to build it, i could probably make one of these in a day or two XD

Thanks for the compliments! ^_^
