A Time Lord's Pocket 3 by Police-Box-Traveler A Time Lord's Pocket 3 by Police-Box-Traveler
Here it is folks! The much anticipated Tom Baker edition of the "A Time Lord's Pocket" series of my photos, featuring the items you might find in the pocket of a Time Lord!

Here, we have the items most often associated with Tom Bakers 4th Doctor, that being his classic Sonic Screwdriver, his Tardis Key, His Yo-Yo, and of course his ever present bag of Jelly Babies.

A few notes on this picture; The bag for the Jelly Babies, I originally tried a white paper bag similar to the one he usually used, however, it had a tendency to wash out too easily and become over saturated and become lost in my photos, so I ended up using a small brown paper bag instead. I also had a hard time figuring out what font to use at the bottom of the picture too. I had wanted to find something kinda fun and typical of the 70's and Toms Bohemian type Doctor, I hope this one works ok. I also wound up displaying everything on a giant piece of white foam-core board to resemble the stark white interior of the Tardis from the classic series. I always try to make the picture look the way you'd find the Time Lord in question keeping his surroundings like, hence the marble surface for the 9th/10th Doctors Sonic in the first picture, the wooden surface for the all brass instruments in the second picture and of course, the very unnaturally white white in this picture.

If i get my new Sonic Screwdriver soon, I'll be using that one for my next picture. It's sort of a bridge between the classic Sonic, and the modern Sonic and may feature a steel finger ring like the River Song version of the Sonic Screwdriver in the Silence In The Library episode in season 4 of the new series.

OH! and before anyone in the USA asks, yes, those ARE actual Jelly Babies! :D

I know, but the up side is that the brand I get from the UK is much more pleasant in taste and texture.

This was done with what I had on hand, lol. If I was trying to put everything Tom Baker ever took out of his pockets as the Doctor this would have been a very busy picture indeed. I just stuck with the most well known items associated with his Doctor and left it at that.

Well, at least you have his jelly babies. How many jelly babies does he have?

Lol, well it's not like he ever carried a set number of them at any time. I'm sure they just shoved whatever into a candy bag that they had, hell often times he wasn't even carrying Jelly Babies. He on several occasions used licorice allsorts instead, lol.

I'll bet it was bottomless. It's no wonder the Fifth Doctor had fillings. It was probably to compensate for the seven years of non stop Jelly Babies.

I often wonder if the Doctor's teeth regenerate with him...they seem to since 10 said he had new teeth...that implies that 5 regenerated with the fillings, lol.

Not only implied, you can see them in one episode.

Lol, well I don't think that implies anything in the context of the show as much as it implies that Peter Davison has fillings. In terms of the show however you're just supposed to overlook that along with anything that is visibly a budgetary restriction in terms of models and effects.

Are jelly babies kind of like sour patch kids but without the sour?

Not quite but kinda. I find they aren't as chewy like gummy products here are. They're easy to bite through and depending on the brand have a slightly grainy texture. They're a very old style confection too in that they don't have as many ingredients. Probably better for you than sour Patch Kids.

Well, depends. If you put them in a glassine bag they would be good enough. Tom Baker was known for offering "Jelly Babies" that when you looked were actually Liquorice Allsorts so a stand in probably would be OK.

Well, I'm not aware that there's any US made Jelly Baby manufacturer. Most I've found was imported from England in the international foods sections of some grocery stores XD Even then here's several brands with varying degrees of texture and flavors. Best look at what you want to get is how they looked in the TV movie. The 7th Doctor is eating some while reading. Whichever brand those are is what I used. XD

It's from the mold process. See, they make the molds out of corn starch or powdered sugar , then pour in the gooey stuff and then shake the molds to get the candy out. The candy is then automatically dusted with whatever they used to make the molds. Seen it on Mr. Rodgers when i was little XD

I tried Jelly Babies once, but unfortunately, I found them unsatisfactory in texture. It was like putting a spoonful of jam in my mouth without the spoon.

I'm unfortunately used to the firmer gummy candies that have a little more bite to them.

Nevertheless, nice collection! :)

They are an odd sort of confection. There's two brands that make them though. I do believe one is a bit more...grainy for lack of a better word which is these and the other is a bit more like a gummy bear apparently. I haven't tried that one XD

Thanks though ^_^ I wanna do another like this with my newer 4th Doctors sonic XD

I do believe I've tried the "grainy" one. I'd like to try the "gummy" one next time around.

Where does one acquire Sonic Screwdrivers in the U.S.?

That is a good question. I don't know many makers here in the US. I bought all mine from builders in the UK not including the ones I'm making. It really also depends on what sort of style you're looking for. Classic or modern series.

Ummmm, yeah a little. XD My RB Replicas 4th Doctor sonic with sound made from aluminum cost me $189 and that was before the custom upgrades. A 10th Doctor sonic in metal with light and sound costs around $300-ish. My own redesigned classic that I sold cost about $195-ish and my modded brass plumbing hardware sonic typically sells for $130 but i throw in a matching brass tardis key brass trimmed leather psychic paper wallet too. I've got an 8th Doctors sonic coming for $150 and I paid out $200 for a custom Teletran designed sonic that is still being made by my manufactuerer in Singapore.
